OVERVIEW

The Software Engineering programme at the University of Greater Manchester has been designed collaboratively working with industrial partners to ensure that students study a comprehensive programme of relevant industrial topics. Many of the graduates find successful careers in this lucrative area of employment.

Coursework prepares students for their post-university career through realistic scenarios, emphasising technical skills and delivering required outputs like technical proposals and reports. Project-based coursework frequently involves group work, emphasising the crucial skill of effective teamwork in modern software engineering.

The programme emphasises internationalisation, covering cultural aspects, localisation, and international standards in software engineering and application development. Furthermore, this is a Top-Up programme designed to allow individuals to progress from an appropriate prior qualification to an honours degree level. An induction programme will facilitate an effective transition to honours degree study.

Entry Requirement

  • You should have a Level 5 Ofqual regulated qualification in a computing related subject.
  • You will need either a FdSc or HND in a software engineering or Computing/programming related courses.
  • Students with non-traditional qualifications and/or relevant experience may be accepted onto the course after a successful interview.
  • You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

How Students Study

Learning and teaching methods apply a blended style. This may include lectures, seminars, tutorials and critiques, self-directed learning, e-learning and laboratory/workshop sessions, as well as online sessions and support. Practical skills are acquired through technical introduction and support, workshop sessions, demonstrations and activity-based assignments. Active learning is promoted with a strong practical theme, throughout.

Qualification Structure

The following modules will be covered in the BEng (Hons) in Software Engineering (Top-up) degree course, carrying a total of 120 credits.

This module provides students with the experience of demonstrating their ability to work independently on a significant, in-depth project requiring the coherent and critical application of Computer Science theory and skills. Students must initially produce a project proposal and related materials to frame the work, specifying clear, specific, academically justified, and appropriately scoped aims and objectives, as well as feasible means for fulfilling those aims and objectives. Students then work independently to fulfil those project goals. Through this process the students are expected to demonstrate the application of practical development and analytical skills, innovation and/or creativity, and the synthesis of information, ideas and practices to generate a coherent problem solution. Self-management and self-evaluation are key expectations of this process. Your project area should reflect your skills and future career objectives.

This module introduces software engineers and computer scientists to the agile methodology, related frameworks, management practices and testing strategies which are increasingly used in industry. The assessment approach targets authentic experiences through immersion in agile methodologies while developing a significant software artefact. Critical and lateral thinking capabilities must be employed to independently formulate and justify approaches for management and testing.

The purpose of this module is to integrate your software development skills through the construction of enterprise-level systems to solve a business problem. Enterprise based Business applications are complex, distributed systems composed of distinct interacting components. They provide integrated support for key business processes, which allows an organisation to be more effective and responsive to changing needs than multiple standalone applications. The emphasis of this module is the development of enterprise software (design methods, technologies, standards and trends). To support communication and decision making during development and deployment, the commercial motivation and system management issues are considered. This module also reinforces the need for business systems to be constructed to solve business issues.
